Debbie Humberstone | Founder

NV DebbieHi, I’m Debbie.  Five years ago my daughter developed severe mental health issues which took her from leading a ‘normal’ teenage life to being admitted to an adolescent psychiatric unit with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self harm and suicidal thoughts.  She was 16 at the time.  Now, 5 years on, my daughter is doing well, and we want to use our experience to help others.

The Project has been set up to offer information, help and support to young people who are experiencing issues with their emotional and mental health, and their families.  At the time my daughter was ill, we struggled to find the help and support my daughter, and my family, needed.  Now, I am passionate about improving mental health services for young people, to make them friendly and accessible for them.

Kerry Cable | Mental Health Support Worker

NV Kerry

I started working with The Project, as a volunteer, at the very beginning of the planning stage. After a year of our support groups being open, I progressed to take over the role of mental health worker.

There were a number of reasons that made me want to get involved with The Project. I was studying to be a psychotherapist at the time, and had started working as a young person’s counsellor in Exeter. I was passionate about what The Project hoped to achieve and jumped on the opportunity to help build a much needed service for the young people that struggle in our community and also highlight the importance of mental health awareness nationally. Also, knowing how much I had struggled with mental health issues, through my teens and beyond, I felt this is where I could make the most difference.

I absolutely love my job and my favourite part is getting to know loads of awesome young people and hanging out with them every week – even though we are dealing with some serious issues we still manage to have lots of laughs!

Lesley Brown | Session / Group Worker

Hi, I’m Lesley. I am the Group Worker at The Project which means that I organise and run the activities that we do during the support sessions for young people.

I am originally from Northern Ireland but have lived ‘across the water’ since the age of 19 and recently moved to Axminster with my young family.

My background is in teaching and I still currently teach part time at a local primary school. I wanted to get involved with The Project as I love working with young people and have a personal interest in mental health having dealt with my own struggles in the past, most recently with post-natal depression. I think that The Project does an amazing job and I feel very lucky to be part of the team.

Lorna Davis | Info & Admin Support Officer

lorna editedHello, I’m Lorna and I am the Information and Admin Support Officer at the Project. My role focusses on developing The Project’s evaluation, monitoring and reporting systems, as well as supporting my colleagues in the day to day running of the organisation.

My background lies in qualitative data analysis and project development within the voluntary sector and I have worked within the health and social care landscape for many years. During this time I have witnessed the challenges that young people and their families have faced when seeking help and support and I’ve played my part in ensuring the voices of young people are not only heard, but also that they form the basis on which mental health services are planned and delivered, both now and in the future.

Being a parent myself and having faced my own personal challenges during early adulthood, I have huge admiration for The Project and all that it stands for. Now that I am a part of The Project’s journey, I am deeply committed to making a positive contribution to its growth and development and I am thrilled to be part of the team!

Hayley | Volunteer Writing & Communications Officer

IMG_0374Hi, my name is Hayley and I do writing-based and administrative volunteer work at The Project. I’m a writer and mental health blogger at so the role suits me well! I was keen to be involved with The Project because I wish it had existed when I was younger. My mental health problems started when I was a teenager and were exacerbated because I felt isolated. Volunteering at The Project enables me to play a small part in breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health and to help young people with mental health problems feel less alone.
