ITV report on mental illness and The Project

Kate at ITV

Kate editing her film at ITV studios

Several months ago, one of the young people who attends The Project’s support sessions, entered ITV’s ‘Breaking Into News’ competition. Much to her surprise, she was selected as the South West’s regional finalist, and with the assistance of an ITV mentor, Richard Payne (Twitter @richardpayneitv) she got to make a film about a subject of her choice.

Kate very bravely chose to talk about her own mental health experiences, and about The Project.  Her film was shown on ITV Westcountry News in March 2015, and here at The Project we are all so proud of her for having the courage to share her story in this way, and of all her peers who agreed to be featured in her film.

There is always a risk in speaking openly about mental illness – our young people frequently tell us about how other people’s negative attitudes to their problems make it difficult to talk about what they are going through.  We hope that Kate’s film will go some way to challenging attitudes to mental health problems, and raise awareness of the wider issues.

Please take a few minutes to watch Kate’s film and the ITV Westcountry News report.
